Recent news reports are suggesting that the long developed FT-86 low priced sports car hatched in partnership between Toyota and Subaru will come to the US as the Scion FR-S.
The sports car based on Subaru mechanicals would be offered with the company’s 2.5 liter flat-four cylinder engine and would be priced in the low $20,000 range, making it a perfect entry for the Scion brand in America. The same engine currently produces 170hp in the 2011 Subraru Impreza but could be tuned for slightly more in this application.
The car could also be offered with Subaru’s all wheel drive and there are even rumors that a 300 + horsepower turbocharged variant of the WRX Sti engine could be offered if Toyota felt there was a strong enough market for it in the States.
Additionally, it is being said that drifting driver Tanner Faust would be brought in to help promote the FR-S for Scion as he has with rear-wheel drive converted Scion tC’s in the past couple of years. It is expected that the Scion FR-S will be shown at the New York Auto Show in April and production will begin late this year.
