Toyota has announced that production stoppage at all plants in Japan will continue indefinitely due to the overwhelming effects of the 9.0 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis in the country.
While most plants where Toyota and Scion models are built did not sustain damage due to the disaster, key suppliers of parts in some areas have been hobbled. Additionally, the supply transportation systems that get parts to factories and cars to the shipping ports have been compromised.
There has been news that some stamping equipment at the Kanto Auto Works plant where the Scion xD and xB are built had been displaced by the earthquake, but nothing that could not be remedied.
Toyota is concentrating on getting their parts plants and parts suppliers back up and running first to keep their assembly operations in other parts of the world operational, including the United States.
Power shortages in Japan as well as the united focus on reacting to the devastation that occurred has been paramount and getting production back into full sing across the country will take some time. Toyota has not stated any planned time when production will resume.
What this means to Scion buyers in the States is that the dealers will not be able to get new orders for cars for a short time. That will likely result in less selection as time goes on and likely higher transaction prices if the shortages continue. For owners, some parts availability for replacement items or accessories could be affected long term if the stoppages go on for long, but not likely.
