2012 Scion iQ Electric To Be Fleet Only

After Toyota announced that two electric models would be coming to market in 2012 at a dealer meeting in Las Vegas earlier this month, the news traveled fast.  Toyota shared with dealers that both a 100% electric Toyota RAV4 would go on sale as well as a 2012 Scion iQ.

In the past week however news surfaced that the Toyota RAV4 would only be sold to fleets which sent ripple waves across the auto spectrum. The news as it turns out was incorrect, that Toyota this week has been forced to clarify.

The 2012 Toyota RAV4 Electric will indeed be sold to the general public despite news to the otherwise. Toyota made this clear in their statements and added that public interest has been extremely high for the vehicle.

What may be equally disappointing to some is that that Scion iQ electric which captivated the interest of many with the surprise announcement, will not be made available for consumer sales.

Toyota stated that indeed the micro car Scion iQ electric will only be marketed to fleets and car sharing programs. The car would likely be so expensive that consumer market sales would be tenuous anyway. With the standard gasoline version starting at $15,995, an electric version will likely be north of $25,000 at minimum – a hard sell for most.

With fleet sales the Scion iQ electric will more than likely be purchased by local and state governments who are likely less worried about its cost than its PR benefits.
