Kaley Szarmack, 10-year-old girl, Survives Shark Attack and Saves Her Pal

At a Florida beach, a 10-year-old American girl who was bitten in the leg by a shark waded back into the surf to save a younger friend, as said by her relatives.

The girl, whose name is Kaley Szarmack, is recovering in a hospital after receiving 90 stitches following the shark attack in shallow water off the city of Jacksonville on Wednesday, as told to WJXT radio by her father.

Dave Szarmack told the station “She got bit on the right leg. She said she felt it and she turned around and she could see the shark and she could see the fin flailing around”.

She discovered shark who was a 3-foot-long darting around nearby and its dorsal fin which was protruding from the surface of water, as said by her father Dave Szarmack.

The girl started screaming about the shark after getting out of the water and yelled her friend to do the same, “Get out of the water! It’s a shark!”, but still the younger girl stayed in the water.

Explaining the incident her father said, “So she turned around and went back and got the other 6-year-old and took her out of the water. She pulled the little girl back out of the water,”

Kaley was then taken to Wolfson Children’s Hospital, where she underwent a surgery which was an hour-long and received around 90 stitches.

Dave added that, Kaley’s wound is large and it took an hour for surgery, but she is expected to recover fully.

Dave said “She’ll be able to run, jump, swim and surf in not too long of healing time. Going to have a pretty big scar and quite a story to tell, though”.

She did not suffer any unknown permanent damage.

Doctors are keeping an extreme careful watch until she is fully healed as they are concerned about her risk of infection.

Thumbs up for her heroic actions and presence of mind.
