Alex Kingston is returning to Doctor Who for this year’s Christmas special and the shooting has been already started.  She started acting in Doctor Who in 2008 and now she will return in the role. The Christmas special is written by Steven Moffat and is set on a future Christmas Day with the TARDIS parked on a snowy village street, covered in icicles, awaiting its next adventure. This is splendid news for all those who loved her with a gun and filthy mouth.

“Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who,” says Steven Moffat, “and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song. The last time the Doctor saw her, she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time …”

The programme depicts the adventures of the Doctor, a Time Lord— a space – and time-travelling alien. He explores the universe in his TARDIS, a sentient time-travelling space ship. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. He is accompanied by companions, and he combats a variety of foes while working to save civilizations and help people in need.

Kingston said, “To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special. Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”

She appeared in the Whouniverse in 2008’s Silence in the Forest of the Dead as a cousin of Audrey Niffinger’s The Time Traveller’s Wife. The doctor had no clue who she was and after that she ultimately knew the truth that they met last time, and that this was the day she was to die. She acted in 15 episodes to date.

There are more guest-casting needs to be done for the holiday episode. The regular season of Doctor Who will begin on BBC America on September 19.
